Greg,
This is one of the best podcasts I have listened to on your show. I am 36 years old and live in Syracuse NY and also am just beginning to really learn about the faith I was raised in. I also feel exactly as the woman who sent you the email and I don’t feel as embarrassed now after istening to this. I love this show you and your wife are great!
I may have to get Sirius radio just to hear you guys.
Erin –
Thanks for the comments. It’s amazing how many people have responded to this conversation. We’re certainly not alone!
Greg,
There are many of us out there who share your experience with poor upbringing in the faith by our parents, priest and teachers (in that order). In my life it led to a lot of fear because of my ignorance.
The turning point for me was at my baptism of our first. When the priest asked me (DW was not Catholic at that point) to promise to raise him in the faith it was like a shock. I wondered how I could teach my son how to get to heaven when I was so ignorant. I realized that even though I was let down in my upbringing it was time to take responsibility for my own ignorance. After all, I was a grown man capable of reading and learning. That was nearly 10 years ago and I’m still learning and loving it.
If you’ve read Fr. Larry Richards book “Be A Man” he talks about the very same thing, taking responsibility for ones own ignorance.
God Bless,
Michael
P.S. Catholic Familyland…you’d love it.
