Nine Days Left: Diaper Changing Practice

We figured it was time to break out the monkey for some good old diaper changing practice. My mother gave our soon-to-be born diaper a stuffed monkey for Christmas, so we used that for practice. It’s always a little shocking to be reminded of just how small newborn diapers are.

This little girl is still very active in my womb and I wonder if it’s possible for her to remain this active even when I eventually go into labor.

The big question is will this baby girl come early, on time or dare I say “late”? Here’s my delivery history:

Sam was born 1 week early.

Walt came 2 weeks early, but was induced, so who knows when he would have come.

Ben was 2-3 days early.

Tom was on time.

Any predictions?

I Could Stay Like This All Day Long

It is a very, very, very rare thing when I am home alone.

There is always someone else in the house, making noises, talking, doing something.  That’s a part of being in a large family.  And I imagine once the baby arrives in a few days, the noise will only increase.

So when I have the opportunity to just sit and do nothing, I snag it.

The kids are at school, the dog is asleep, and Jennifer is up at the Rosary Army office, snagging some paperwork so she can finish all of the end of the year tax stuff for Rosary Army before the baby arrives

So with today’s show all ready to go a little over an hour from now, and quite a bit already lined up for tomorrow, I decided to put the computer aside for a few minutes and finished reading Tobit.  I never read it from beginning to end all once before.  I started it last night and finished it this morning.

Laying on the couch in a completely silent house, the hard part of today’s show already behind me, finished reading the Bible for the day, it was a good way to start the morning.

12 Days Until Due Date: Girl Clothes

I’m starting to think that it really shouldn’t be as difficult for us to accept the fact we’re about to have daughter as it has been.

I mean, really. It’s just a girl.

And we’ve known about the sex of the baby for months now.

We should be used to the idea by now!

But after 11 years of parenting only boys, we’re still completely perplexed by the smallest things.

Case in point, this morning we ran our very first load of pink laundry. EVER.

Looking at the labels I saw warnings like “Wash with LIKE COLORS ONLY.”

The realization burst into my brain that we are entering territory where the possibility exists of ruining all of our white clothes by turning them pink.

Even after the clothes were in the washer and swishing around, I just sort of stared at them like I was looking at something alien. What were these pink clothes doing in the washing machine?

Later in the day, while we were doing our broadcast, I took a picture of Jennifer on her side of the studio desk and realized she never wears pink.

Until I got her a pink t-shirt, I can’t recall her ever having any other pink clothes.

So why do we assume this baby girl should only wear predominantly pink clothes?

Will this only be the case when she’s an infant, or will she quickly graduate to purples and blues like her mom wears?

In the meantime, I guess we’ll just continue to acclimate ourselves to the color pink.

Maybe it’ll make more sense once she arrives and we can look at her and say, “Ooooooooohhhh! THAT’S why she needs to wear pink.”

I’ve been hoping for a lot of epiphanies like that lately.

13 Days Until Due Date

This was a weekend of a lot more prep for the baby by doing a lot of piddly stuff that added up to a lot of work.

One of the things we got accomplished was simply getting the car seat out of the attic, cleaned up, and ready to go.

The tricky part, though, was putting a seat back into our van that we’ve never used and then figure out where each kid would now sit.

Trust me, it was a lot harder than it sounds.

But now the seat is in the van and we’re one step closer to being ready for the baby girl.

17 Days Until Due Date: The Movie!

17 Days Until Due Date MovieWith only 17 days left until our first baby girl is due, we decided to post a quick video to give just a peek into what we’re doing only minutes before broadcasting “The Catholics Next Door” on the Catholic Channel, Sirius 159/XM 117. Enjoy!

18 Days Until Due Date

For Christmas I tried to put together a special surprise for Jennifer and the kids, including our little girl who has not yet arrived.

After consulting with our friend Captain Jeff, who does all of the printing of shirts and mugs and bags and stuff for both Rosary Army and That Catholic Show, I came up with the logo for The Catholics Next Door that you see on the top left of this website.

My hope was to get t-shirts printed with the new logo and give them to my parents, Adam Hamway (our producer), Jackie Resciniti (our board operator), Jennifer, and all the kids.

And for Jennifer, I wanted to get her a shirt to wear now while she’s pregnant, and another t-shirt to wear later.

And I wanted the shirts for the girls to be pink.

In the first picture you’ll see the onesie Jeff printed for the new baby, and below is a picture of Jennifer wearing her oversized maternity shirt.

We’ve all been enjoying wearing them as a family.

Plus my Rosary Army and That Catholic Show t-shirts were really getting worn out.

Unexpected Package

So a few minutes ago I’m in the kitchen, working on show prep for today and tomorrow, when I heard a truck in the driveway.

It was a UPS truck, and yet we haven’t ordered anything.

I was thinking it was probably a book or DVD or something sent to us for The Catholics Next Door, but then the driver got off the truck with a pretty large box.

My first thought was that perhaps either Jennifer or I had ordered something for Christmas, and completed forgot we did, and it was just now showing up.

I took it inside, opened it up, and was totally confused to find a package of newborn diapers.

The invoice slip was hidden in the bottom of the box.  Apparently a good priest friend of ours must have been listening to the show the other day when we said we were still in denial about getting ready for the baby and it was too funny of an opportunity to pass up.

Here’s what the note said:

I hope this helps on the Diaper front!  Happy New Year and Merry Christmas!  Peace, Fr. Bill Kessler

Diapers from a priest.  Never thought I’d see the day.

You rock, Fr. Bill!

19 Days Until Due Date

Jennifer and Greg at 38 weeks pregnant:

And just to prove that he’s not really THAT fat, here’s Greg when he’s not shoving his stomach out (but still, this is enough to get him started on the Abs Diet this week):

And in deciding a pose for today’s Due Date Countdown picture, we took a front and back picture of Jennifer. She straightened her hair out today. She’s had straight hair for every child delivery, so in my opinion, she’s ready for labor now.

And lastly, just in case she wanted to make a donation to Locks For Love (I’m hoping not yet – I LOVE the long hair), this is how much would be cut off.

20 Days Until Due Date

We’ve reached the weird phase of this pregnancy where we’re pretty much talking about the baby constantly and what still needs to be done to get ready for the birth.

So in preparation, I thought it would be a good idea to try to post at least a pic a day of what’s happening in preparing.

For example, tonight we had a laugh when Jennifer realized her belly had gotten to the size that she could no longer reach the skillet we keep on a shelf in the laundry room. She even tried to squeeze her belly between the washer and dryer to no avail.

Another nice moment was just a few minutes ago, watching Jennifer and Tommy sing Hail Mary before Tom heads to bed.

If this baby shows up in the next 20 days as expected, Tommy is in the midst of his remaining days as the baby of the family.

Happy New Year 2009!

Happy New Year from our family to yours!

We had a nice, laid back evening hanging out with our friends Mac and Katherine (hosts of Catholic in a Small Town Podcast).

Three of the kids passed out before midnight but three more made it to midnight.

Very strange to think we are now in the month and year when we’ll become parents of a baby girl.

Should be an interesting 2009!

Illegal Gun Sales

This is one of those instances where, as parents, we don’t know whether to be proud or horrified.

As many people know, Sam has an uncanny ability to make various things out of paper and tape.

His specialty is weaponry.

We don’t know why that is, exactly, but if he sees a weapon in a book, movie, or elsewhere, he has to make his own version out of paper and tape, and then he protects the creations mercilessly.

So it was to our surprise when Sam came downstairs this morning, laid out a selection of his creations on the kitchen table, put pricetags on them, and then proceeded to sell them to his brothers, who were more than willing to toss all of their money at him.

He took them for over three dollars.

Walt then followed example and opened up his own pawn shop, selling all of the random junk he no longer wanted.

Should we be bothered that the older boys are selling stuff to their brothers, or proud of their entrepreneurship and initiative?
