Good Grades Get Dairy Queen

The boys brought home their report cards today. Tommy doesn’t get one yet, and Ben only gets ‘S’ grades for Satisfactory.

But Sam and Walt both came home with all A’s and B’s on their cards, which was great considering their mid-term grades were not so great.

Considering the fact that they’d made so much progress, we figured ice cream after dinner was a suitable treat.

Spring!

We’re finally starting to see the results of our labor from last November when we planted 39 trees in the back yard.

Actually, it was 34 trees and 5 shrubbery things, but still, 39 plants put in the ground in a single day.

The other day I was talking to our producer Adam on the phone as I walked through the backyard, looking at the leaves popping out on various trees.

Adam, who is in New York, heard birds over the phone and immediately shouted his frustration.

This, of course, meant I needed to hang up the phone and take pictures to send to Adam and the other The Catholic Channel folks in New York just to taunt them.

Waffle House

We’ve been eating a lot of waffles lately. So much so, that I feel like we could give another Casa de Waffles a run for their money.

I think Tommy agrees:

Slip and Slide

On Saturday a bunch of local businesses were offering an open house to get the word out about what they have to offer.  In the past, these kinds of things seem to be a bit of a bust, in my opinion.

But this time around they offered 20+ inflatable attractions to get families out there.

My worry is always that they’ll end up charging for tickets or that there will be some hidden charge.  Even though they kept advertising all of the inflatable stuff for free, I still suspected they’d end up charging us for tickets or something.

I warned the boys ahead of time that I wouldn’t be buying any food and if they tried to sell tickets, we’d have to leave.

To our pleasant surprise, the rides were all indeed actually free.

And they had a blast.

The boys did try to get me to spend ridiculous amounts on food they were selling, but I wouldn’t budge.  Even still, they had an absolute blast and it didn’t cost us a single penny.

Here’s Ben and Tom climbing up the stairs to one of the slides:

Climbing into an inflatable obstacle course:

Tommy making his way over one obstacle:

This was Ben and Tom’s favorite one.  It was a huge inflatable train they could climb inside of:

Sam and Walt enjoyed the inflatable contraptions for older kids.  This one was funny to watch.  They were strapped in, then ran forward to see who could get the furthest before a bungee cord jerked them backwards.  It really made me laugh to watch them.

They were determined to beat each other on this race thing.  Too funny.

Just Call It What It Is

I was just buying a thermometer for Lily and saw this box.

I’m not sure any further description is necessary.

Tummy Time

It’s  been a few days since I posted some random Lily pics.

During our last doctor’s appointment for her, the doctor recommended that we give her daily “Tummy Time” where she has to lay on her stomach, even if she doesn’t want to, just to help her get stronger all around.

Have to say, this girl is already pretty strong and doesn’t a good job pushing herself up.

Overall, Lily still spends a lot of time sleeping more than anything, but she’s also starting to be a lot more alert.

I’ve been enjoying taking her for walks up and down the street and just ambling through the yard.  She very much seems to enjoy whenever we take her outside.

The boys have transitioned to her with no problems, and even Jody (as evidenced by the photo below) finds her very intriguing.

This picture is from Lily’s first visit to Kaiteur.  Moose is on the left and our friend Patrick is on the right.  Lily is that little pink thing in the lower left corner.  You can’t really see her in this, but I still thought it was a funny picture.

While all the brothers love Lily, Tommy probably spends the most time trying to love on her.

More than anything, though, this girl is one good snuggler.

Understanding Moby

mobyI decided to buy the Moby Wrap to help me carry the baby around without using my arms so much.  You should check out this thing on their website: www.mobywrap.com.  It’s an incredibly LONG piece of fabric that you wrap around your body.  I’m still trying to figure it out and perfect my skills with it.  It’s definitely taking some getting used to.  But the demonstration video on their website made it look so easy, I had to try it myself.  Here’s a picture of me with Lily all mobied up.  And of course, our youngest son had to pose for the occasion.

Strep x 2

This is getting ridiculous.

I finished today’s show, came downstairs, and Jennifer said both Ben and Tom had a fever.

We gave them Tylenol and called the doctor to beg and see them.

No ear infections. No sinus problems.

Then came the big swabs (Ben now cries when he gets tested) and I was very surprised that they both came back with positive strep results.

Oh joy.

And now the doctor is thinking Ben and Tom might need their tonsils removed. We have no idea how we’ll manage that one.

Help Us Plan A Vacation

disney-cruise-image-headerSo this year we’re thinking about doing something wacky.  We hear there is something called a “vacation” where a family can go and have fun and relax and do stuff together away from one’s home.  We’ve attempted said “vacations” in the past, but we usually end up staying home because of the costs and instead I do yard work.

Other past vacations have included removing wallpaper from a bathroom, building shelves in the garage, painting multiple rooms in the house, and smacking my head on ceiling beams in the attic while putting down plywood flooring.

The last time we had one of these so-called “vacations,” it was a pseudo one.  Our friends Kristy and Daniel were getting married, she happened to be from a part of Florida near a beach, so we combined the two and stayed for a couple extra days.  That was almost two years ago.

Prior to that, the last time we took the family anywhere was almost five years ago, and it was for one night.  We were visiting my sister in Florida and decided to kidnap my mom and go stay at a kid-friendly hotel in Orlando for a night.  No theme parks or anything.  Just swimming pool and fun, which was good for us at the time, but very short-lived.

Before that, the last time we really went on a genuine vacation was the summer before Tommy was born, so that would have been 2003, I think.  So we’re going on six years since actually going on a vacation.

This year, now that we actually have a job with vacation time again, for the first time in several years, we’d actually like to go somewhere that would qualify as a real vacation.

Here are the top two things we’d like to do, but have quickly discovered we apparently cannot afford or ever will be able to afford:

Go to Rome
Take a Cruise

We have never been out of the country before, and really have no clue how to do it.  Furthermore, we have no idea how feasible it would be to take our kids out of the country.  Jennifer and I have passports, but we really don’t want to pay for passports for the kids if we don’t plan on taking them out of the country any time soon.

The Cruise thing, lately, has been our top want.  And I realize that during Lent, talking about wants is sort of pointless.

We used to think Crusies were frivolous, pointless, wastes of money.  Now we think they are frivolous, pointless, wastes of money that we want to go on.

The idea of not having to clean or cook for seven people for a couple of days has become really, really attractive for Jennifer.  Therefore, it’s an attractive idea for me. What makes her happy and content makes me less likely to get in trouble.

Unfortunately, to go on a cruise with this many kids means we’d need two rooms, so we’d probably end up bringing my mom along or something to help out, and therefore, it would cost us even more.

Also, unfortunately, going on a cruise with this many kids would also cost as much as a decent used car.  Are we just not looking in the right places?

So at this point, we’re trying to figure out what to do, what vacation options are available to us, and if it’s possible for us to even do something.

We don’t want to charge a vacation with credit cards since we’ve worked so hard to eliminate all of our debt except for our house, so whatever we end up doing, we want to start saving for it now so we pay for everything 100% with cash.

But like with so many things, we’re clueless about vacation possibilities.  So help us out, if you would.  Do you know of any awesome family vacations that won’t break the bank?  Again, a cruise would be awesome, but we’re thinking it’s just going to be impossible until we’re 73 years old.

What about something like renting a lake house somewhere or something along those lines?  Seriously, we’re vacation neophytes so we have absolutely no idea what is doable.

So bring on your suggestions and links to great deals!  And many thanks in advance!

Lily’s Baptism

img_3316Lily was Baptized last night in an absolutely beautiful and simple Mass celebrated by our good friend Fr. Bill Kessler.

The picture to the left is the first family photo we’ve managed to take since Lily was born. We don’t get many photos taken with all of us in the photo at once and I admit it’s strange to see just how much all of us have changed since our last family photo.

This Was Good To See Today

We’re barely at mid-February, so I was quite surprised to find these blooms on the trees in our front yard.

I just hope that we don’t get a sudden cold spell that will just kill them all. But then again, March is right around the corner.

After seeing these, I’m excited to see if the new trees we planted in November will start to take off in the next few weeks.

End of the Week Photo Wrap-Up

Lily has a bit more growing to do before she fills out this outfit her Lito and Abuelita got her for Christmas. Here are some more photos of Lily that have been taken over the past week. I hate how she’s already changing in so many ways.

Overall, it’s been a very good week. I still ended up doing more work than I planned on, but since I’ll be flying solo on The Catholics Next Door for the next month, I suppose it was necessary.

But we did get a lot of good time in with Lily, as well as the boys. And today we took Lily to Adoration for the first time. We only stayed for about 15 minutes, but it was nice to bring Lily before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and sit there for what time we could in prayer.

If you would, please keep praying for Jennifer. Because of the pregnancy, labor, and delivery, she’s very behind on a lot of tax stuff for Rosary Army as well as our family and is feeling quite stressed out about that at the moment. This is always the busiest time of the year for her, so having a baby in the middle of it has just made it even more stressful. Thanks in advance, and thanks for all the prayers you’ve offered up over the past week, as well.
